How to compare moving estimates
A useful moving estimate describes the work being reviewed. Compare the inventory, services, access and timing together so a short price summary does not hide important differences between two proposed plans.
Start with the same information
Give each team a consistent list of large furniture, an estimated carton count and photos of unusual pieces. Include every collection area, such as a basement, garage or separate building. Describe the actual load rather than relying only on the number of bedrooms.
Record both addresses and any additional stops. Mark furniture intended for storage, approved donation or removal. If you are still deciding what will move, identify those pieces as uncertain so they can be discussed instead of silently included or excluded.
Separate the requested services
List moving, packing, unpacking, storage and removal tasks individually. A furniture move with a kitchen-only pack is different from a whole-home packing job. Ask whether materials, disassembly discussions or empty-carton gathering are included in the proposed scope.
Write down what you will do yourself. That may include self-packed cartons, belongings transported in your own vehicle or furniture collected by a family member. Keep the plan updated when those decisions change the work.
Make the access and timing visible
Show the path from each room to the likely loading point and into the destination. Include floor levels, stairs, landings, elevators and exterior carrying distance. Ask the property contact about shared-building arrangements and provide the relevant answers.
Distinguish a preferred date from a fixed handover or move window. If storage is involved, explain the gap between collection and delivery. Uncertain access or dates should remain visible questions, not assumptions concealed inside a confirmed-looking schedule.
Read the assumptions before booking
Compare the written scope alongside the price. Ask what the estimate assumes, how changes are reviewed and which questions remain open before an appointment is confirmed. Keep the latest written version with the inventory and access notes used to prepare it.
If you want an explanation of included handling protections, reporting a problem or any optional arrangements, ask the team to describe them clearly before you agree to the work. Do not infer an answer from a brief marketing phrase or an unfamiliar label.
Your working checklist
- The same furniture and carton information used for comparison.
- Separate service tasks and additional stops listed.
- Access photographs and building arrangements provided.
- Preferred dates distinguished from fixed deadlines.
- Assumptions and the process for changes understood.
Before confirming the work
A helpful final question is: does this written plan still match the move we intend to make? Reconcile furniture added or removed, new packing needs and changed destinations before booking rather than relying on the earliest version of the request.
